It was a cold January night in 2017....A Full Moon... and the owls had come to visit...
In this rural area of Maryland we have a vast array of wildlife and it is not unusual to see birds of prey... Bald Eagles, Osprey, Hawks, and Yes OWLS! Usually I can hear the Great Horned Owls, off in the distance, hooting their familiar sound. A steady drum beat of 3-4 hoots and then silence.. and shortly after... another and another.... But on this cold January evening at midnight this was not a normal owl experience.... It began at around 10:30pm.... an owl began hooting in a tree just behind the house... but then another owl arrived..and another..and another... By around midnight there were FIVE horned owls hooting around the house. A cold chill ran up my spine...I stepped outside with my three dogs and even they were in total disbelief.. We all stared into the trees above, as the owls continued their chants. At this point I was freaked out..the dogs were freaked out and we just stood there silently looking up in the air.... Then it all turned even more unusual..One of the owls took flight and landed on the chimney and sat perched up there, staring back down at me and my little furry friends, as if to say.."WHOOOO are you looking at?" Native Americans believe the owl has a spiritual meaning: The owl is emblematic of a deep connection with wisdom and intuitive knowledge. If you have the owl as totem or power animal, you’re likely to have the ability to see what’s usually hidden to most. When the spirit of this animal guides you, you can see the true reality, beyond illusion and deceit. The owl also offers for those who have it a personal totem the inspiration and guidance necessary to deeply explore the unknown and the magic of life. “A wise old owl sat on an oak; The more he saw the less he spoke; The less he spoke the more he heard; Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?” ~Unknown At that moment in time..I knew they were speaking to me... Some changes were happening in my life...and they showed up that night as a symbol... The owl may not have been on my totem..but it was definitely on my chimney!
